Tree Health in Waco, TX

A preventative, whole-tree approach to tree health from an ISA Certified Arborist, serving Waco, Temple, Marlin, and surrounding Central Texas.

When a tree starts to decline, the first step is figuring out why. Owner Andrew Moody is an ISA Certified Arborist (TX-5039A) and Texas Oak Wilt Qualified (TXOWQ-610) with over 10 years of tree work experience. Andrew doesn’t treat symptoms with sprays or injections. He takes a holistic approach to tree health: he finds the root cause of the problem, helps you prevent it, and tells you honestly when a tree should come down.

Andrew’s Approach

  1. Look at the whole tree. Andrew checks the tree and its surroundings, not just the leaves that look wrong.
  2. Find the root cause. Stress from drought, freezes, broken limbs, poor pruning and fresh wounds can all leave a tree open to problems. Andrew works out what’s really behind the decline.
  3. Prevent, don’t just react. Healthy trees resist disease better. Steady watering through Central Texas heat and drought, and avoiding broken branches and unnecessary wounds, go a long way.
  4. Prune the right way. Proper finish cuts and no lion’s tailing. On oaks, Andrew paints fresh wounds when emergency pruning has to happen during oak wilt risk season, or in areas with previous oak wilt outbreaks. (Tree Pruning · Proper Pruning Cuts)
  5. Remove when it’s the right call. When a tree can’t recover or has become a hazard, Andrew will tell you so and talk through removal options. (Tree & Stump Removal)

Oak Wilt in Central Texas

Oak wilt is a fungal disease spread by beetles. It’s a vascular disease, so it restricts the tree’s ability to move nutrients. As a Texas Oak Wilt Qualified arborist, Andrew completed the Texas A&M Forest Service and ISA Texas Chapter training and assessment on identifying and managing oak wilt. He can diagnose oak wilt on your property and help you address it.

How to lower the risk

  • Keep oaks healthy and watered through heat and drought.
  • Avoid broken branches and unnecessary fresh wounds.
  • Don’t lion’s-tail the canopy.
  • If an oak needs emergency pruning during oak wilt risk season, or sits in an area with previous oak wilt outbreaks, the fresh wounds should be painted.

Emerald Ash Borer

Emerald ash borer is an insect pest that attacks ash trees. If 30% or more of an ash tree’s canopy has been affected, Andrew recommends removing the tree, and the wood needs to be burned.

When a Diseased Tree Should Come Down

Sometimes removal is the safest choice, especially when a dead or dying tree hangs over a house, drive, or walk. Removing it also helps protect nearby trees and plants. We offer four removal options to fit your budget.
