Andrew uses reduction cuts back to a strong lateral branch instead. What is lion’s tailing, and do you do it? Lion’s tailing strips the inner canopy and leaves foliage only at the tips. We don’t do it, because it shifts weight to the ends of limbs and weakens them. Do you paint pruning cuts? Not routinely. On oaks, Andrew paints fresh wounds when emergency pruning has to happen during oak wilt risk season, or when the tree is in an area with previous oak wilt outbreaks. Paint doesn’t fix a bad cut.
