Stump Grinding in Waco, TX
After a tree comes down, the stump can still get in the way—hard to mow around, easy to trip over, and an eyesore in an otherwise clear yard. Wise Oak Tree Service offers stump grinding as the most complete of our tree removal options, so there’s no stump left standing in your lawn. We also grind stumps left from past removals or other jobs—existing stumps with no tree removal on the same visit. We serve homes and businesses in Waco, Temple, Marlin, and nearby communities.

Why Grind a Stump?
- Trip hazard. A stump is easy to miss in tall grass, at dusk, or when kids and pets are running through the yard.
- Mowing headache. You have to steer around it every time you mow, and the blade can catch the wood.
- Pests and decay. Stumps can attract insects and become a place for rot to linger in the landscape.
- Looks unfinished. Even a stump cut flush with the ground still marks where the tree was and can make new landscaping harder.
- Sprouting (some species). Cutting a stump flush with the ground does not always stop regrowth. Some species can sprout from a flush-cut stump. Grinding leaves nothing to grow back. At your free estimate, Andrew will tell you if your tree is one of those species.
Stump grinding finishes the job—whether we just removed the tree or you’re clearing a stump left from a past removal or another job—so the yard is clear and ready for whatever comes next: grass, a garden bed, or a new tree.
How Stump Grinding Fits with Tree Removal
Stump grinding is the first of our four tree removal options, listed from the most complete (highest cost) to the most budget-friendly (lowest cost):
- Full removal with stump grinding. Our most complete option. We take the whole tree down and grind the stump, so there’s no stump left to trip over or mow around.
- Full removal with the stump cut to ground level. We take the whole tree down and cut the stump level with the ground. The stump stays in place, which costs less than grinding it.
- Keep the logs as firewood. We take the tree down and leave the logs for you as firewood—about 16″ rounds, not split—which lowers the cost compared with full removal.
- Habitat snag for wildlife. Instead of removing the whole tree, we leave part of the dead trunk standing as a snag that gives wildlife a place to live. It’s our most budget-friendly option.
What to Expect
- Free estimate first. Call or text (254) 252-1951. We’ll talk through the tree or stump on your property, walk the site when we estimate, and explain which option fits your goals and budget—full removal with grinding, or stump-only if the tree is already gone.
- With removal or stump-only. We grind stumps as part of full tree removal, and we grind existing stumps left from past removals or other jobs with no tree removal on the same visit.
- Grinding clears the stump. We grind the stump so there’s nothing left to trip over or mow around, and nothing left that can grow back.
- Grindings stay piled on site. We leave the wood grindings (sometimes called chips) in a pile where the stump was. Hauling them away would leave a big hole. Over time, with rain, the grindings settle and sink to fill that void.
- Flush-cut is the lower-cost alternative. If you’d rather keep costs down on a removal job, we can cut the stump to ground level instead of grinding it. Andrew will tell you at the estimate if your species is one that can sprout from a flush cut.
- Cleanup from tree work is normally included. Debris hauling for branches and other tree debris is part of the usual job. Prefer to handle that cleanup yourself for a lower price? Just ask when we estimate. Stump grindings are separate: they stay piled on site to fill the hole.
- Site limits. We cannot grind stumps that have grown into fences or foundations. Please tell us about any buried utilities before we start—those responsibilities, and more, are in our Terms and Conditions.
- Homes and businesses. We work with homeowners and commercial properties in Waco, Temple, Marlin, and nearby communities.
We typically grind stumps 3–6 inches below grade. Ask about your specific stump and site when you request your free estimate.

Stump Grinding FAQ
What’s the difference between stump grinding and cutting a stump to ground level?
Stump grinding is our most complete option: we grind the stump so there’s nothing left to trip over or mow around. Cutting the stump to ground level costs less; the stump stays in place, flush with the ground. Ask about both when you request your free estimate.
Will a stump grow back after grinding?
Grinding leaves nothing to grow back. Cutting a stump flush is different: some species can sprout from a flush-cut stump. At your free estimate, Andrew will tell you if your tree is one of those species.
How deep do you grind a stump?
We typically grind stumps 3–6 inches below grade. Ask about your specific stump when you request your free estimate.
Is cleanup included with stump grinding?
Cleanup and debris hauling from tree work are normally included. If you’d rather handle that cleanup yourself, ask about a lower price. Stump grindings are different: we leave them in a pile on site so they can settle and fill the hole where the stump was.
Are the wood grindings left on site or hauled away?
We leave the wood grindings (the mulch-like material from grinding the stump—sometimes called chips) in a pile on site. If we hauled them away, you’d be left with a big hole where the stump was. Over time, with rain, the grindings settle and sink to fill that void. Cleanup and debris from tree work are normally included separately; stump grindings stay piled to fill the hole.
How does stump grinding fit with your tree removal options?
Full removal with stump grinding is the first of our four tree removal options, listed from highest to lowest cost. The others are full removal with the stump cut to ground level, keeping the logs as firewood (about 16″ rounds, not split), and a habitat snag for wildlife. You can read all four options on our tree removal page, or ask about them when you call (254) 252-1951.
Can you grind a stump if the tree is already gone?
Yes—we grind existing stumps with no tree removal on the same job, and we also offer stump grinding as part of full tree removal.
Can you grind a stump near a fence, foundation, or buried utilities?
We cannot grind stumps that have grown into fences or foundations. Please tell us about any buried utilities on your property before we start. More detail is in our Terms and Conditions: https://wiseoaktreeservice.com/terms/. Ask about your specific site when you request a free estimate.
Where do you offer stump grinding?
